aka "Canada's Roswell" (nickname, not a finding) · October 4 to 8, 1967 · Shag Harbour, Nova Scotia, Canada · water-entry, search record
Status note: Unexplained in the records; not proven non-human.
At a glance
On the night of October 4, 1967, witnesses off Nova Scotia reported lights descending into the water. Rescue crews searched for a downed aircraft and found none, and the Navy sent divers. The surviving records show a search with negative results and no object produced.
Documented
- A Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) Halifax telex headed "FOR CFOC UFO REPORT" (RCC076, 050210Z Oct 67) lists an RCMP corporal and six other witnesses. [1]
- The telex describes a dark object over 60 feet across carrying four white lights, descending to the water with a high whistling sound and a bright flash. [1]
- The same telex says other leads "(A/C, FLARES, ETC.)" were "CHECKED - NIL RESULTS." [1]
- A headquarters memo of October 6, 1967 says the possibilities of an aircraft, flares, floats or any other known objects were "discounted." [1]
- Navy dive operations continued; a Navy situation report says "SEARCH CONTINUED 08 OCT NEGATIVE RESULTS" and that the search was terminated that day. [1]
- "UFO report" was a routine heading: Vancouver telexes of September 28, 1967 carry the same heading for a white light "similar to a/c nav light," and a headquarters form letter calls it a report "passed to this office for evaluation." The heading meant a report to evaluate, not a finding. [1]
Reported
- The witnesses are those named in the telex (an RCMP corporal and six others). [1]
Explained
- Marine flares or a fireball. Proposed by a skeptical analysis (Skeptoid #565). Labeled speculation on screen. Nobody has produced an object. [2]
Not established
A wreck, an object, a cause. Not used here: larger witness counts and extra details from secondary sources, which the primary file does not support. Note on the records: the telex says other leads were "checked, nil results"; the later memo says they were "discounted." We quote each separately; neither "ruled out" anything.
